Open Studio Live is a 2U rack-mountable and portable workstation with custom designed hardware and software for musicians, composers, DJ's and music education departments. All USB dongle protection systems work unmodified. The system is designed by musicians for musicians. We talk to our customers and count it a privilege to share in your creativity. Our Managing Director's name is Robert Sherratt, a well known musician and entrepreneur whose contribution on Korg Forums and as creator of the "Korg Arranger Secrets" training DVD's has led to many friendships. The Open Studio Live product is the result of hard work and input from those friends, and we thank you all.

What kind of "Studio" is included?

Integrated into the system is an 8-audio-in and 8-audio-out digital mixer with full-duplex recording capability. The rear panel audio outputs are combination sockets which allow you to connect using XLR cables, or quarter inch cables. The inputs and outputs automatically switch between mono and stereo operation, with mono signals automatically summed from an output pair or split into an input pair as appropriate. The sockets automatically detect when balanced cables are inserted and switch into balanced driver/ receiver mode. A unique front panel operating system easily allows any of the inputs and outputs to be selected and the channel parameters adjusted. MIDI tracks may be routed to any of the 8 audio outputs, and any of the 8 audio inputs may be routed to your favorite DAW recording software.

Four inputs are routed to the front panel and a microphone pre-amplifier allows two high quality microphones to be connected. We do not believe in providing 48v "phantom power" on our microphone inputs, because too many non-powered microphones have been destroyed through equipment that applied 48v when it was not wanted. You can still use powered microphones if you want, but you will have to use a separate 48v power supply. A high quality stereo headphone output which auto-senses the headphone impedance and allows a variety of different headphones to be used, is included on the front panel.

What about gigging musicians needing arrangements?

For those musicians wanting chord based accompaniment (some do, some don't), a backing and arranger module option is available. It will be fully licensed and configured, ready to go. We have optimized the style arrangements to use our on-board sound library and we added a few tweaks to ensure that all styles are perfectly balanced and that the default effects are set to appropriate levels. You can, of course, edit the standard style arrangements and make your own derivatives. We encourage customers to share their best work via the Open Studio Live forum to benefit other musicians, and file-sharing facilities will be provided on the user forum pages.

Will I need a QWERTY keyboard and mouse?

All our software is configured to be used via a compact 17 inch touch-screen which is included as an option with Open Studio Live systems. You want your musical resources to be one touch away and instantly available, and you've got it with Open Studio Live. Should you choose to use a QWERTY keyboard and mouse then there's nothing to stop you doing so. We also support an additional large screen monitor, via DVI-D or HDMI, at the same time as our touch screen. We provide one set of standard MIDI connectors and ten USB connectors that allow MIDI-USB keyboards and controllers to be connected and automatically configured for use, "out-of-the-box". MIDI controllers such as drum pads and sliders may be easily configured using "MIDI Learn" to assign many aspects of Open Studio Live. ANY keyboard or controller, as long as it has a MIDI output can be used to drive Open Studio Live's sounds.

Some will want to connect Audio and MIDI to a Macintosh or another PC. We provide you with the software to allow both MIDI and digital Audio to be connected over the LAN cable, all 16 channels of Digital audio in fact, which is more than you will achieve using Firewire or USB2. But for those with legacy Firewire equipment, we have a couple of Firewire sockets on the rear panel and you can buy a low profile Firewire adaptor from us to make those sockets sing!
